@sinvega @sinbad like. you need to roll ability X. oh, well, lets have the person with +13 to that ability do it. oh look they succeeded what fun i enjoy playing dnd but i have Some Feelings about the mechanical design

    @eniko yeah same. Also why I encouraged my hlk to "let" another character do the survival/navigation checks sometimes - her being from a communal clan of widely-oppressed people, she naturally wants to share her knowledge cos (a) that's just what you DO, why would you not? god humans are so fucking backwards. And (b) she expects to die But there's not even much room for sharing skills/knowledge, unlses the DM is generous with "you gain +1 to x in context y". And then you reinforce the problem!

  • @eniko @sinvega Yeah - D&D can be fun but it’s usually nothing to do with the system, which basically needs a good DM to constantly bend the rules to keep things interesting. More modern systems realise that the rules should be there solely to make things *more* interesting, to add wrinkles and unexpected complications beyond collaborative story telling, and perfect pass/fail results are always the least interesting result. So you get systems like FitD which are always “Yes/No, but…” instead
