hey so, can someone explain why model collapse doesn't occur in coding AIs? because there's more and more AI code being put up on places like github so presumably AI is also being trained on that new AI generated code or does it happen and the hyperscaler jerkos just don't care

jpeg compression artifacts are good actually. they add texture

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/117004224062056366 AI would never generate something that looks and feels like this

Do you ever wish a divine power would smite every petty bureaucrat on the entire planet or is that just me

Got some good news today!!! Can't share it but yay good news

The thing that does a piss poor job of putting down the 80% of code for a project that's 20% of the actual work (and so will never lead to a polished fully realized product) is not inevitable. Or necessary. Or useful. Or harmless.

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/117007911912036302 anyway developing for DOS (or other vintage hardware) gives you interesting limitations and most of the aesthetic things people are digging about You Have Died came about as a result of those limitations. so i recommend giving it a try

may have gone a bit extra with the enemy death animation in You Have Died (And Been Reincarnated As A Fox Girl) but i like it :3

added basic enemy attacks to You Have Died (And Been Reincarnated As A Fox Girl), a game about being reincarnated as a fox girl in a dungeon town where everyone else is also isekaid girls and gay shenanigans and dungeon diving ensue

trying to figure out how to animate enemy attacks in You Have Died. i was just gonna go for the old final fantasy flasheroo, but idk if thats smart given some people are sensitive to that but i also don't know what to replace it with

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/116997338342433005 anyway if you ever need an adapter between your microphone and microphone arm for the love of god save yourself a ton of grief and get a metal one

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/116929515673367840 people ask me why i'm making a DOS version of You Have Died (And Been Reincarnated As A Fox Girl) and 1. it's because i can and it's fun for me 2. it's much more likely to continue running properly in a DOS emulator than on modern systems lmao

hope you all like dungeon diving games because i've got so many ideas for follow ups to You Have Died

RE: https://mastodon.social/@scalzi/116968541476805915 enclosing the commons before it actually matures into the commons is surely a great sign for the health and longevity of the AI ecosystem

finished the draw action in You Have Died (And Been Reincarnated As A Fox Girl) which draws 3 cards from the deck and lets you pick one to put into your hand you can also redraw, which shuffles the cards back into the deck and draws again, but raises stress #GameDev #IndieGame #PixelArt #IndieDev

working on You Have Died i keep thinking i should make a more robust framework for the gui instead of just doing every element as a custom job but also making a framework would take 10x longer than just doing every single widget as a custom thing. it's not gonna have that many menus, it's fine, this is faster actually

With all of these wildfires maybe public spaces should be mandated to have robust air filtration so people can breathe safe air. Just a thought >_>

apparently mastodon just promotes cw text to main post text if the main post text is blank? well i don't like that behavior

i'm not minding writing You Have Died in C but it really requires a lot of discipline to make sure everything you do is error checked, even if it's just an assert fortunately i'd gotten used to writing code very defensively anyway even in C# cause crashing is just about the worst thing you can do, but still. it's a lot

"actually its fine if agentic code is unmaintainable for humans because the agents will just maintain it" is just the next cope in a long series of copes from LLM true believers who said they were going to revolutionize customer support, summaries, art, writing and video, all of which they failed at genAI is a dead-end technology that creates output without intention that is practically useless. the only reason it hasn't failed yet is because of the trillions pumped into it by bus...

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/116929515673367840 magic attack animation for You Have Died done! this one was trickier since it's a magic attack so kinda ranged, but i think the recoil pushing the character sprite backwards works?

Excess deaths from heatwaves and wildfire smoke will absolutely be normalized because the same playbook can be used that was used to normalize forever covid infections: people dying or disabled were "vulnerable" anyway (whatever the fuck that means) so it doesn't count, because it doesn't affect normal* healthy** individuals This is of course not true, but nobody let that stop them with covid and nobody will let that stop them with this

and that's our first bit of combat animation for You Have Died (And Been Reincarnated As A Fox Girl) done! really pleased with how this came out a little detail i'm proud of is the snake's HP bar dropping smoothly instead of instantly, something i've never added to a game before

can actually do a physical attack in You Have Died (And Been Reincarnated As A Fox Girl) now and it animates and everything. haven't plugged in the final art for the player though so you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see it i think that's the first bit of actual player-prompted gameplay, huzzah!

Tbh my biggest advice for aspiring indie developers is that you simply cannot go 2-4 years between releases
