@sinbad (granted, that's more of a simulation vs board game thing, but stuff like storium comes to mind too, where players actively fuck up sometimes and choose their own bad outcome to (a) conserve better options for a later problem that's more important and (b) make a more interesting story. I am new to tabletop and have fun with d&d but the "if I attempt any of these other things and fail I might as well not have shown up at all" thing definitely stands out, and that's with a great DM

@sinbad eg my horrible little kobold is tiny and clearly an archer. So I picture people rushing into melee, and finding out that she's also the physically strongest in the party when she starts grappling and whacking them with a hammer... but in practice, it's just mathematically likelier that she'll miss and nothing happens, and I should have minmaxed instead. (admittedly, some of the weapon masteries were a small step towards improving this) ...sry I think my meds are kicking in oooo

  • @sinvega @sinbad the whole pass/fail thing in dnd also has a downside in that if you want your character to be competent at something you really gotta put your thumb on the scale and as a result you wind up pretty much never failing it which also diffuses tension
