@sinbad I like this philosophy, but I also wonder stuff. Can a miss not just be a miss? If you throw something at someone, does that mean if you miss then they hit you?

    @sillyCoelophysis @sinbad You should only roll dice when the outcome is uncertain and the success or failure is interesting in some way. If there are no consequences to failure then it doesn’t matter what the outcome of the roll is. So, I think, no- a miss can’t just be a miss. There should have been something riding on that throw! Maybe you were trying to knock them down before they escaped. Maybe they were threatening you. Whatever those stakes were, *that* is what should happen.

  • @sillyCoelophysis them hitting you in response is the most basic bad outcome, but there are lots of others. Maybe it misses them but knocks over a lantern which sets fire to the space you’re in, suddenly adding a time factor to the fight. Or maybe it hits an ally, or a neutral bystander who now joins in the fight against you. So long as it’s never “nothing happened” - no-one would write that pure whiff action into a book or movie after all
