@sillyCoelophysis them hitting you in response is the most basic bad outcome, but there are lots of others. Maybe it misses them but knocks over a lantern which sets fire to the space you’re in, suddenly adding a time factor to the fight. Or maybe it hits an ally, or a neutral bystander who now joins in the fight against you. So long as it’s never “nothing happened” - no-one would write that pure whiff action into a book or movie after all
