Web scraping combined with (at least potentially) hidden weightings now produces plausible and seemingly authoritative outputs. Concerns are already being expressed that our trusted knowledge sources risk ingesting "evidence" generated by such AI processes. Trusted knowledge sources are the only basis for training "good" AI tools, so this circularity is alarming. It means that it is now even more important for us to preserve and protect major corpora of data and foundational knowledge. (2/6)

Meanwhile, corporate/billionaire/government interests remain aligned against true action in response to climate change, habitat loss, wasteful consumerism, etc. The case here in Australia of Violet Coco being jailed for at least eight months for blocking one lane of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for 25 minutes is just one example of how aggressively these forces may work to maintain the status quo.
