I feel like there are very few good long-term guidelines for social media behavior but “try to work through your grief and fear without yelling at people who are working through their own grief and fear in their own way” feels like a solid candidate.

@kissane Excellent advice in real life too. When my husband passed last summer, I was amazed by how many people told me without prompting - about their own unresolved loss and grief, sometimes decades old- in trying to offer condolences. Had I not been caught up in my own trauma I’d have been empathetic, but it’s impossible to save someone else when you are drowning yourself. It was all I could do not to scream. It stuck with me as a good lesson for myself for the future.

@kissane Hello! @Ffangohr and I would like to turn this into a DO NOT REPLY card. We would tweak the copy and you can have approval. Would that be okay, and if so, attrib/non-attrib?

@kissane @TheBreadmonkey For me: you don't know these people, you don't owe strangers anything and they don't owe you anything other than common politeness and empathy. There's no point getting offended by someone you don't know from Adam, it only lives in your own head, your anger doesn't affect them.

@kissane I remember Tressie McMillan Cottam on Twitter talking about some damn thing that happened and saying people were gonna grieve at their own pace and when everyone's out of sync on grief on social media it gets ugly. That's stayed with me.
