@nazokiyoubinbou @scribblemacher True. Good point. Like, by the time most people were hating on it, there was no reason to be frustrated because they had easy access to the information they needed.

@Judeau @scribblemacher I've been told that it all stemmed from the Angry Videogame Nerd video hating on it way back when that blew out of proportions and unexpected popularity. I can't say for sure if this is true since I didn't even know of AVGN at that time (it would have been among his earliest videos) but it sort of fits I suppose? He even later said he was wrong about it. After all, it was just meant to be an early Internet show, not meant to be taken seriously.

@Judeau @nazokiyoubinbou this is the part that always got me about Castlevania 2. You either played it in the early 90s when cryptic games were pretty common and a feature rather than a defect, or you played it after the advent of GameFAQs and similar and could easily get answers to problems. There are games I don't like (or haven't figured out how to like yet!) but I have never encountered a truly bad game.
