windows 11 also gives me this feeling whenever i catch a glimpse of it. its very odd. it looks like a linux distro from the 2010s. the kind people would recommend because it "works just like Windows" and i would take one look at it and be like "no it doesn't? that doesnt look anything like Windows? i cant, in good conscience, recommend this to my grandma can i? she's going to be really perturbed by it" etc. but now it seems that microsoft themselves want to perturb my grandma

@piggo @jk If you ever have somebody that's still on Windows, and wants Solitaire, you can get them old one through https://winaero.com/get-windows-7-games-for-windows-10/ (also works on 11, despite the title).

@jk unclear & mono icons isn't "we're easy to use!" Linux Mint with Mate desktop and a modified "MS Server 2003" theme with Oxygen icons is "easy to use". Easier than current MacOS, Win7, Win8, win10 or Win 11. A program you absolutely need might not run, which is why I have actual Licenced Win96, XP, Win7 and Win10 VMs on Linux. Funny you can't have any version of MacOS at any money? MS has Diskk2VHD https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/disk2vhd and with bit of fiddling I was able to clone my 2002 XP laptop to VM.

@jk Linux has reached the competition not by it getting better but by the competition getting worse?

@jk Yes! I do like a Mac, but macOS 26 looks like absolute garbage. The massively over-rounded window corners and the weird fringing around the dock icons looks like crap. Also don't get me started on Liquid Glass. Liquid Ass more like.

@jk i'd risk to say that macos and mobile26 looks like offspring from abusive relationship of osx and gnome shell

@jk feels a bit harsh on all those geeks that worked so hard to emulate the mac look on linux and yet entirely fair...

@jk HA HA HA, mac OS is actually Free BSD with some fancy makeup. And as for the other linux bashers remove it from your lives. About 95% of the internet depends on it. Go play with your telemetry infused poxy win 11 boxes, or cold mac burger diffused glass os.

@jk@mastodon.social when i heard about the liquid UI - it felt like Deja-vu from the Windows Vista era, so I literally ran to my Mac and turned off the auto updates, same for the phone. I'm on a limited lifetime now with the devices, but I swear, its going to be a linux laptop and an open-source phone for me, whenever that comes.

@jk@mastodon.social i’m someone who actually likes liquid glass and the look of iOS 26 so i upgraded my mac to 26 as well. i had the same reaction as you: what ugly amateur mess is this?!

@jk@mastodon.social Slightly related, I'm bothered by how many window managers/distros try to look just like macOS or Windows. I get the need to appeal to defectors, but it seems so few try to be their own Linuxy thing. And if you do a search for "most beautiful linux desktop" or whatever, most of them look like slightly more colorful/shiny macOS/W11.
