@readeck Just to play Devil’s advocate, we can already right-click to highlight, which selects a single word. What if we work on that behaviour?
1. We can have a no highlight option (a ’No’ symbol)
2. Since the right-click behaviour has selected a word as usual, the user makes a note, Readeck places a square marker next to the word (in lieu of a highlight, so it’s visually different but not functionally)
3. In future we accesses the note through that marker
No more compulsory highlighting!

@vhbelvadi step 2 is the complex part :) adding something changes the document's structure and highlights need a clean document to work on. That's why it will start with highlight + optional note. It can change in the future, of course. Besides, I suspect margin markers to be a layout/css nightmare
