@vhbelvadi step 2 is the complex part :) adding something changes the document's structure and highlights need a clean document to work on. That's why it will start with highlight + optional note. It can change in the future, of course.
Besides, I suspect margin markers to be a layout/css nightmare

@readeck Yes, I can absolutely understand the code overhead involved. As one last thought, how does the idea of a faint underline to highlight a note without proper highlight colour sound? That wouldn’t change any functionality, just a new highlight colour (kind of). The underline already exists for highlights. But of course if you see it best to move down the roadmap, that’s good too. Any notes function is a welcome addition!
