All of these are valid. The first one, AI as a field of research, was how I was first introduced to it in 1988 at LPARL. And as a field of research, there had been many useful and interesting algorithms and heuristics. I also learned in 1988 and since, that intelligence is never artificial and machines don’t actually learn.
I would add that AI has been a marketing term since the beginning, first to get grants and later, investments.

@jadp 💯 When I studied it in 2000, it was just a fancy name for machine “learning” (which wasn’t really learning, kinda training, kinda just math) which was itself just a fancy name for linear algebra. I also learned roughly the same year that robotics was also just a fancy name for reverse kinematics which was just a fancy name for linear algebra. :)
