Putting this out to Mastodon before I do my own digging: Has anyone ever used the TeamTalk SDK (or some other hack) to stream audio from a headless Linux server to a TeamTalk channel? I had a Windows desktop I was using as a sort of security system while I was away from home, and that machine has since died an unexplained death. It would be nice to just replace this with a Raspberry Pi. I'm aware I can also just stream to an Icecast server, and I'll do that if nothing else works, but I already have the TeamTalk server set up at home.

@simon Those media bots had to do something like that somehow... They could do YouTUbe and such

@simon Technical feasibility aside, it seems like Icecast, HLS, or some other type of HTTP streaming would have usefully wider compatibility. E.g. throw an icon on your home screen/desktop to open and play an HLS m3u8 in Safari or Chrome. Play it in VLC on basically anything. Load it on a Sonos speaker without wasting your phone's battery AirPlaying it. If you're away from home and something happens that requires a response, will the few seconds of latency saved by TeamTalk make any difference? Software to encode HTTP streams is more battle-hardened for long-running deployments.

  • @simon Sadly not, would be interested as well. But I can say that streaming to IceCast is what I do and it works quite all right.

@simon Yep others have mentioned TTMediaBot which does exactly that.
