the problem is not android getting closed source, but so many phones running it in the first place. android like ios never was a good operating for any computing device. it always put restrictions on what you can do on your own device. it isn't even remotely what using a computer should be like. smarthphones are computers, that can do phone calls.

@condret@shitposter.world Android was always proprietary software - it was never even source available - "AOSP" lacks what is needed to get any device working.

@condret@shitposter.world With all the power smartphones have, like ridiculous fucking power, power so goddamn high practically nobody is using it... And we still have pieces of shit toy OSes, it's absolutely incredible. They're more of less laptop powerful and we still don't have serious OSes that bloom into a full OS if docked (except maybe these Linux phones I keep hearing about?), what a fucking tragedy
