"The code is open source, are you not competent enough to read it yourself and evaluate its safety?" This person does not realize that 99.99% of users do not program, and have to go on trust authored by other people. Very few people actually evaluate the code of every piece of software going on their system, if you share the opening sentiment of this post you are dead wrong about basically all PC users.

@thatgalsilver@zoner.work also, doing security audits is really hard

  • @thatgalsilver i've always thought RMS's philosphy of "i refuse to run any code that i can't audit" was a little silly, because there is not enough time in a single lifetime to audit it all even if you did nothing else

@thatgalsilver@zoner.work I'm not driving this car until I verify myself that it doesn't explode. I'm not eating this apple until I test it for poison. I'm not going to use math until I see the proofs of arithmetic and algebra. I'm not going to hire this person cause of their degree until I see them perform each and every requisite task. like... at some point one has trust other people. People who don't get that concern me.

@thatgalsilver@zoner.work yuup, and then those people design systems that basically require you to program, and then get all elitist around it too and then we wonder why people still use windows despite all the w11 shit
