Some hand-knitting techniques translate easily to the machine, but others... not so much. I've been trying different methods for hat decreases to see which is easiest and still looks good. Details & side views at the blog:

@emery I like how the stripes turn to a square and there's sort of a raised cross pattern. It makes it stand out from all the other plain round hats out there. Too bad it takes more work.

@emery I like the square look too, but yeah, nothing wrong with the tension gather either! I'm curious how you feel about the knitted as a tube and then closed flat across the top look. It's a bit like a knitted Byzantine hat...and if worn sideways gives you a pussy hat 😁
