To be conservative essentially means believing you're the exception. The rule doesn't encompass you. You're special.
Which rule? Well, the specifics of that shape what kind of conservative you are. From a libertarian to a religious nut, from a Respectable Gay to a gun nut. From a racist to a transphobe.
But you have to believe your own lie that you're better than others. More aware. More of a person.
If you don't know what I mean, read "The only moral abortion is my abortion" for an example. It's easily available online.

To be clear: we all think like that, to an extent. We all judge ourselves for our motivations and others for their actions. It's inevitable. We have insight into ourselves that we never will into others. Not fully. But the *extent* to which we believe we are unique and above those pesky limitations others face is whether we end up politically conservative, in my opinion. It's really funny that the buzzword for conservatives some years ago was "snowflake", when there's no one believing they're more special and unique than a reactionary.
