@Anibyl@social.coop number of links or just length in metres? As chains wear they elongate, the holes in the side plates become slightly oval and the pins develop grooves where those side plates contact them. That's how chains wear out #BikeTooter

@Anibyl@social.coop That is odd, chains are typically longer than anyone needs for anything other than a cargo bike or recumbent or other non-standard safety bike.

@Anibyl@social.coop There are some common lengths for new chains - could a shorter version have been inadvertently purchased? Different brands sometimes provide different standard lengths.

@Anibyl@social.coop This prob won't account for that difference but I changed my chain on my ebike recently and threaded it incorrectly through the rear derailleur and when I did correctly it was a link or two longer.

@Anibyl@social.coop For future reference, you can rip a derailleur right off if the chain is sufficiently short and you are putting sufficient force into the pedals
