This post is from 2019 so it's a bit old now, and attention to the issue over the past few years has apparently helped to improve things somewhat now. @fraggle This is amazingly stupid. But a great opportunity for scammers and the like, I guess? Just put reassuring pictures next the text telling customers how they'll get screwed over, and many will just make up a nice story. Don't even need to bury the nasty parts in a 100 page EULA that no one reads!

@fraggle i remember reading some years ago that a bunch of right-wing pro-homeschooling people in the u.s. decided that the "whole language" approach to reading, the one that includes the flawed "cueing" idea, was a conspiracy to instill "moral relativism" in children, and as a result, phonics became strongly associated with homeschooling i can imagine this at least partly lead to educators wanting to defend the "whole language" approach and just to make sure, the conspiracists only picked what turned out to be the actually-better method of teaching kids to read by accident but i feel like a lot of well-intentioned people would have a harder time changing their mind if that meant agreeing on the basic premise, even if for entirely different reasons, with the people who think that evolution is fake

@fraggle My mother, once a grade school teacher, told me a story of visiting a class after a career change to check the children's vision. While waiting, she observed the teacher prompting the kids, "What do you do when you read a word you don't know?" In chorus: "Read around it!" Shock and horror. This was maybe fifteen years ago.
