@fraggle i remember reading some years ago that a bunch of right-wing pro-homeschooling people in the u.s. decided that the "whole language" approach to reading, the one that includes the flawed "cueing" idea, was a conspiracy to instill "moral relativism" in children, and as a result, phonics became strongly associated with homeschooling
i can imagine this at least partly lead to educators wanting to defend the "whole language" approach
and just to make sure, the conspiracists only picked what turned out to be the actually-better method of teaching kids to read by accident
but i feel like a lot of well-intentioned people would have a harder time changing their mind if that meant agreeing on the basic premise, even if for entirely different reasons, with the people who think that evolution is fake
