Thank you all so far (and feel free to keep commenting!) :blobhaj_cathug: It's looking Tuta, Proton or my own domain are strong contenders. Anyone have strong views about any of these options?!? (Or other options!) Any specifications or other things I should consider? (Remember: I'm not a techie!)

@curiousjay@mastodon.nz I would not say I'm techy but possibly this verges onto "moderate level tech skils" so feel free to ignore. I self host my own email. So I bought a domain name and then use Eco Hosting for email hosting and Thunderbird on desktop & mobile to receive/send email. https://www.ecohosting.co.uk/email.html I hear the folks at @beasts@social.mythic-beasts.com do email hosting to and they are excellent at tech support.

@curiousjay@mastodon.nz I would recommend starting with a paid service, like fastmail. They'll handle email + calendar. Self-hosting that stuff is possible (e.g., with Nextcloud), but email is possibly the most annoying/stressful thing to self-host. I'm happy to let fastmail handle it for me. (And having them host email for a custom domain is well-documented, plus their support folks can help if there are issues)
