An incredibly bad idea: We’re about to turn night into day. Proposals before the FCC involve mirrors that could bathe entire cities in sunlight and, from SpaceX, a million satellites to serve as data centers. https://wapo.st/4rUr58z

It's "Odd Duck" Season on our pond -- the time of year when migratory waterfowl use the waters neighboring our house for rest and refueling. Our first guest this year, spotted today, is a male Lesser Scaub. This is actually a photo I shot here on April 1, 2024. Same bird? I don't know. I hope to have opportunities to make some new photos in the next day or so -- sunny tomorrow -- and we'll see if any duck friends show up. And yes, its bill is a delightfu...

I haven't posted in a while so here's a picture from a month ago: Wearing his full seasonal colors, this American Goldfinch waited his turn at the feeder, clinging to supports for a hanging plant. #birds #birdsofnorthamerica #AmericanGoldfinch

#AI #China this tension is not a technical quirk to be engineered away but a genuine contradiction, one that China’s own political philosophy obliges it to confront. Levi Checketts of Hong Kong Baptist University, the author of the paper, contends that treating artificial intelligence as an insurance policy against ecological collapse is a form of moral hazard, borrowed from economics, that could excuse governments from doing the hard work of cutting carbon emissions now https://bioengineer.org...

Is there something you like that you generally dont recommend to people? My three: The Wandering Inn: If you like the first book, then be prepared for the biggest literary piece on earth. Worldbuilding to the extreame.Creeper World Games: Usually low res, pixelated games about a goo substance that never stops. You "fight" it. Thats the game. I love it, but I cant recommend anyone else.Preserving Loquats: I have a tree that makes enough preservatives for months every time it creates fr...

Asked if he'd be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump, Tom Tiffany said: "They should check Tom Tiffany's record." We did. Even when it meant higher costs for Wisconsin families, he voted with Trump nearly 100% of the time. #WIGov #WIpolitics

i continue to not understand why "aura farming" posters (people who want to be popular, like celebs or journalists) post on private networks like bluesky/threads but then make it very difficult to *see the post* like, if you post something to threads, but i can't read it unless i open a private browser window and turn off javascript, maybe this is not a great way to go viral?

there are a lot of different ways you could spell "apt list-versions", but "apt-cache madison" was not in my first 1000 guesses. this toot sponsored by: vscode pulled in a buggy version of electron that sets all ux elements to be circles, and the only fix is to downgrade. after the "firefox is all circles" crisis of this morning, i see that today's theme will be "everything is circles now!"

I don't know what everyone's complaining about

i'm still reeling from the firefox ux debacle. it so obviously should have been a new theme. make it the new default theme and that would be a good way to let people discover the theme system. instead it seems to be some low-level hack that messes up EVERY theme! it bypasses the theme system completely. so anyone discovering the theme system (like me) becomes doubly frustrated. for the Nth time, i'm loudly wondering how we get firefox out mozilla's hands. the elves lef...

What is your Music piracy system. More than just ‘what app are you using’, but I do want that as well. I want a good mindset for downloading music that has what I want and at least some of what I’ll probably like. Currently, partially as a limitation of the app, I have every song in every album that contains something I like. This works well ish for discovery, but I know less than a quarter of my library, no matter how much time I spend listening to new music. This was with Lidar + tubifary...
