I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum. If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom? You were never a parent at all. You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging. If you can go every level of ham to support their travel hockey league, whether you like hockey or not, you can do it to support their deepest hearts & souls. For fuck’s sake.

@Iconfactory I'm 99% certain that this is Apple's bug, but I figured you'd want to know: I just installed Wallaroo on my MacBook Pro with Golden Gate. I clicked the "Set Wallpaper" button and saw the dialog with the "Install Shortcut" button. I clicked that button, Shortcuts launches, and then displays this window. Clicking the refresh buttion temporarily shows a spinner and then returns to the error. Retrying the whole flow gets the sa...

One of the areas I've most matured is simply asking a question when I don't understand something rather than nodding along or feeling it's an admission of personal failure. Especially in groups, this behavior is tied to realizing that "if you have a question, others probably do, too" which I see so often in my work. Problems and confusion fester because no one bothers to bring them up. And it doesn't inconvenience us, we want to help, to be asked...

It is almost as if, perversely, the worse the data format is the more fun it is to work with. I remember feeling like Innovative's Millennium load tables were secret pipe-delimited incantations & I was an apprentice mage discovering the old magic.

"adding language to our policy" is great and probably necessary but please do not substitute it for action that enforces the policy

Final day at CCA. 12 years 3 months 9 days at this job. I don't even feel that weird yet, perhaps I will next week.

I noticed the "Recorder" tab in Chrome Dev Tools for the first time today https://developer.chrome.com/docs/devtools/recorder I guess this has been around for years but I never bothered to read about it. It's for UI testing but it also seems like a way to do basic recorded macros of browser operations. Potentially very useful.

In my first month I saved $0.28 by using cloud object storage instead of a consumer service. Soon, I will be filthy rich.

Somehow the Chat Pile lead singer recommending Toni Morrison's Beloved in the middle of a concert makes sense? https://chatpile.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-roadburn-2023

At least my college going under saved me from dealing with Bitnami's image deprecations. There is always a silver lining.

Trying to remember to post some IG photos here, too. We had a lovely Saturday of errands, brunch, Portland Art Museum (free tickets via Multnomah County Public Library!), & I finally secured a real bookcase to the wall so I could add to it. The artwork is "Green Star Quilt" (2019) by Wally Dion & yes it is made out of circuitboards, using a pattern based on Native American quilts. An old lady also taking a picture of it said "I have to show my quilting...

Software Quality Is a System, Not an Act. Quality isn't a final inspection step you bolt on before release. It's the cumulative result of dozens of small, boring, automated decisions that happen on every commit, or not at all. My latest article makes it concrete: the real quality pipeline of nurago, my open-source collection of production Go packages. Everything is public and runnable with a single command. https://tecnick.com/articles/software-quality/ #Golang #SoftwareQuali...

Some bugs pick their moment. A flaw that needs dozens of consecutive failures to surface stays hidden through ordinary operation and appears mid-outage, when the retry loop is the only code still running. Delay arithmetic is that kind of code, so the backoff package in nurago keeps it boring: a small, pure calculator for jittered, bounded delays, written and tested once, reused by every retry path in the library. https://tecnick.com/articles/nurago-backoff/ #golang
