This is not quite true
The UK ALWAYS maintained control over its borders before Brexit.
While part of the European Union, the UK opted out of the Schengen Agreement, meaning it kept full passport and identity checks at its borders for all arrivals, including EU citizens. The UK also retained control over its national security, visa policies for non-EU countries, and the deportation of foreign nationals who posed a security threat.
However, as an EU member, the UK was subject to the free movement of persons, which meant it could not limit the number of EU citizens coming to live and work in the country, BUT ONLY provided they were employed, studying, or self-sufficient.
