UPDATE:
As war rages on in Ethiopia, NetBlocks confirms that what it calls a "subnational internet disruption," has been implemented in the country's north. Scores of Tigrayans are suddenly unable to communicate with family.
Phone/internet is disrupted across the Tigray region. Service from the Ethiopian state telecoms provider is completely severed, but service by Kenyan company Safaricom remains active for now, meaning some Tigrayans can still connect and make phone calls.
A very bad sign.

The situation deteriorates in Ethiopia: the Tigray rebels declare an "open war" against the country’s legitimate government.
With the world focused on the Middle East crisis and the one in Ukraine, little attention is being paid to what is happening in Ethiopia, where the situation appears to be rapidly deteriorating. The Tigray rebels have issued heavy statements to AFP, claiming that the region is now in a state of “open war” with the federal government. The statement also refers to heavy artillery attacks that risk further destabilizing the entire area.
Just yesterday, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which dominates the region, launched an offensive taking control of three airports previously under the control of federal police. Subsequently, the same rebels launched attacks in neighboring regions of Afar and Amhara, effectively triggering a new escalation.
As reported by AFP, a humanitarian source in the Afar region has stated that heavy artillery attacks by the rebels continued today, as they were engaged in an attempt to take control of the city of Yallo, near the border with Tigray.
“We are now in a situation of large-scale war,” Amanuel Assefa, vice president of the TPLF, told AFP, confirming that clashes were ongoing in the Afar and Amhara regions, with Tigray forces fighting alongside local armed groups.
According to some analysts, the Tigray rebels would benefit from the support of Eritrea, which fears that Ethiopia, a country without access to the sea, is planning an invasion of its territory to gain access to the Red Sea. This hypothesis has however been denied by the Tigray fighters.
