The SpaceX #satellite constellation plans have a similar feeling—there's a proliferative (proliferationist? ew, sounds like an anti-abortion specialist, all these words) strategy at work. Oversaturation even if it means doing some damage! Occupy an entire sector of space above Earth and keep hold of it as long as possible by whatever strategem. Pretend that all the satellites are gonna burn up but secrete some permanent payloads in among the crowd. It's Zerg Rush tactics, it's like the Zeons in Mobile Suit Gundam—build cheap, build lots—and they're mimicking the Third Reich's methods. And that brings me back to #Macross. The baddies in that show, the Zentradi, have textually cast off their old way of living. They used to be more like human beings but then then torched their "Protoculture" as they put it so they could have a newer, stronger way of life. (cont'd)

We went back to #Macross after a while away from it and geez I'd totally forgotten the...incel-ish view of the future that's reflected in the Zentradi. Watching a couple episodes left me thinking about how if you squint hard enough, it's possible to glimpse another sort of equilibrium for life in the Cosmos, a dismal grim destructive one to be sure but it seems to be roughly what the #tech sector wants, if they want anything certain beyond just pure longevity. Which isn't even really a goal exactly, more like Homer Simpson praying to God "keep everything exactly the way it is and if you give me no sign I'll be happy thx bye." Why not build on a MUCH bigger scale? Here on Earth you can give a reason: build too large and the structure won't be able to support its own mass under ordinary gravitational acceleration. So...what if you just took away the gravity? That's how the techbros think, if you call it thinking. They're like people choosing which load-bearing beam in a building might be least likely to take the whole building down if you remove it and sell it off. (cont'd)
