One of the things AI translation is spectacularly bad at is character voice. A character in a novel does not merely say things. They have habits. Favourite turns of phrase. Odd little colloquialisms. A particular rhythm. Maybe they are dry, breathless, pompous, tender, sarcastic, provincial, flamboyant, or gloriously weird. AI tends to turn all of that into statistically plausible soup. A human translator can look at a character and think: No. This is how this person talks. And then recreate that voice in another language without losing what made it theirs in the first place. That is what translation is supposed to do: change the language while keeping the person. This is one of the reasons I am still fighting for human translation, especially for literature, science, and all the wonderfully strange things that deserve better than AI slop. And yes, I am still trying to keep my little human translation business afloat. 🌱 If you would like to help me keep doing this work, my fundraiser is here: 💜 [https://ko-fi.com/thepurpleoctopus] Sharing it helps enormously, too. Every little signal that human translation still matters counts. 🐙📚 #HumanTranslation #TranslationMatters #LiteraryTranslation #NoAI #SupportHumanWork
