Guillaume Bernard presenting how GNOME can be more accessible by internationalising our projects: "We think of accessibility as just a screen reader for the blind and captions for the deaf - when it is also about making sure software is accessible to those who don't speak English" Watch On Track 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGazCEww9II #GNOME #GUADEC #GUADEC2026

Thomas compares this to a “Plowshare” model; one where we accomplish the same amount of work with more useful output and better tools. It better fits the reality of limited resources, and hobbyist maintainership, but does it help us stay within our means, and achieve our goals? Ultimately, Thomas believes the plowshare model should be the focus of FOSS development and funding—which means focusing on tooling for hobbyist maintainers. We’re moving into Q&A now; watch live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGazCEww9II #GUADEC2026 #GUADEC #GNOME

Historically the model of FOSS has been “Swords”: a fight where users choose between proprietary and FOSS even if both can be commercial. FOSS tries to get community, is centered on user’s rights, and is driven by foundations, digital rights orgs, etc. And it makes sense for sovereignty. But Thomas posits that the model has its problems as well, especially when you compare it to the goals of FOSS, the constraints of reality, and our means. https://www.youtube.com/live/EGazCEww9II #GUADEC2026 #GUADEC #GNOME

Thomas Depierre presenting the keynote “From Swords to Plowshares” at GUADEC, exploring the model of FOSS maintainership in society. “All maps are wrong, some are useful. It depends on what you are doing in the moment.” Similarly, all models are inherently wrong—they’re models, after all. But what is interesting is what they reveal and how they are used. Society depends on software. Software encodes a model of the world—but the world changes. Thus, society needs software to change. This requires maintenance. The reality is that 70% of all software running in production is FOSS (Synopsis, 2020). FOSS has won, and is bigger than you think. Yet, FOSS in the vast majority of cases is “one person” and 60–85% of FOSS is a hobby (Tidelift, 2024)—and there is no link to the criticality of a package. #GUADEC2026 #GUADEC #GNOME
