Un incontro del Meccanismo Esperto delle Nazioni Unite sui Diritti dei Popoli Indigeni (EMRIP) ha visto la partecipazione di attivisti indigeni che hanno esortato a sviluppare l’Intelligenza Artificiale (AI) in conformità con i diritti e le priorità delle comunità indigene. I centri di dati, infrastrutture fondamentali per il funzionamento dell’AI, richiedono enormi quantità di energia e acqua, ma molti sono costruiti in regioni già soggette a stress idrico, scatenando la contrarietà delle popolazioni locali. Diverse fonti interpellate hanno espresso preoccupazioni riguardanti la sovranità delle loro terre, acque e alimenti.
Alcuni hanno evidenziato che, se implementata correttamente, l’infrastruttura potrebbe offrire opportunità per i popoli indigeni, sempre nel rispetto dei principi di consenso libero, preventivo e informato (FPIC), e di partecipazione significativa.

Indigenous Rights and Artificial Intelligence
A meeting of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on Indigenous Peoples’ (EMRIP) saw participation from indigenous activists who urged the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in accordance with the rights and priorities of indigenous communities. Data centers, fundamental infrastructure for AI operations, require enormous amounts of energy and water, but many are built in regions already subject to water stress, triggering local opposition. Several sources interviewed expressed concerns regarding the sovereignty of their lands, waters, and food systems.
Some highlighted that, if implemented correctly, the infrastructure could offer opportunities for indigenous peoples, always in respect of the principles of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and meaningful participation.
