Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The engine knocks; the driver cannot hear;
Things fall apart; the head gasket cannot hold;
Mere smoke is loosed upon the highway,
A cloud of burning oil is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of reliability is drowned;
The best lack all mechanical skill, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity, pointing at the block.
Surely some rescue is at hand;
Surely the Tow Truck is at hand.
The Tow Truck! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of *Hanes Manuals*
Troubles my sight: somewhere in a patch of asphalt
A shape with body of a sedan and the head of a lemon,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the roadside sun,
Is moving its slow wheels, while all about it
Reel shadows of the frantic mechanics.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of smooth combustion
Were vexed to nightmare by a clicking starter,
And what rough jalopy, its tow hook dragging at last,
Slouches towards the auto shop to be born?
