The same bros who say AI is inevitable and "as necessary as air" are the same weirdos who go out in the woods to build lean-tos with a $500 scandi blade made from space age alloys to "reconnect with primitiveness" and who won't eat a damn potato because cave men didn't farm them.

@cR0w@infosec.exchange @krypt3ia@infosec.exchange There is a gigantic gas tank down by the water just south of Boston, and across the street is a very popular and old independent market that makes wonderful prepared foods for lunch. When I worked at the hospital I would go to the market, grab something to eat, then go sit near the gigantic gas tank to have my lunch.
Now, I had that job because of a terrorist event, and I work in security, so I had the same thoughts every single time.
Somewhere around 2016 I went and they had finally put up a chain link fence around it.
It was like seeing someone put a bandaid over a gunshot wound.

@foobarsoft@mastodon.social Oh, they get real indignant if I do that, and imply that I'm the one with the unusual demands.
Usually I'm just sitting there thinking I have cleavage, you think that would "remind" people the masc ship sailed and it's never coming back
Like is it really less awkward for them to call someone with obvious boobs by a boy name?
Half the time it makes other people around think they've lost their minds.
The truly obnoxious thing though is when they "forget" clearly to tell other people of my originally assigned first name. Like it's not bad enough to get my name wrong, they want to make sure other people know which one will piss me off the most.
The psychology of transphobia would fascinate me if I wasn't living in it.

@Impossible_PhD@hachyderm.io That was far more beautiful a thing to read than I was prepared for. Thank you for it, I think I understand at least a little bit more now, and it fit the missing context of your statement like a puzzle piece. I'm glad you got to experience that ❤️

@Impossible_PhD@hachyderm.io Doc have you written anything about what that term means to you? I understand the meaning or the term, I think, but I don't have enough context to parse what you mean by "It was nice to be, to be seen as, altersex on the right way in public for a few hours." and that sounds like that kind of thing I would really enjoy understanding.

Cis people - I'm starting to think maybe you don't actually "forget" my name and pronouns. I mean, I gave y'all the benefit of the doubt the first 100 times or so you "forgot", but seriously, invest in some ginko or something. Get that checked.

Just in case you were a teenager in 1995/1996 and made this same mistake:
Elastica and Republica are not the same band.
Elastica did "Connection" and Republica did "Ready to go"
Thank you, you may return to your business now.

Even for those of us who have played the infosec game our whole career.

After a lifetime of finding it effortless to be a thorn in the side of authority, I find it more difficult lately.
There is no reduction in my desire, there is only increased difficulty finding solid ground from which to make principle stands.
I don't know if that speaks more about myself or the state of the world.

Today my wife and I took our daughter to the doctor. We both went because my wife works in schools and is off for the summer.
I was talking to the receptionist to check in and she said. "so you're obviously mom (to me) and you are? (to my wife)"
Imma be ridin' on that euphoria buzz for a while.
Also I enjoyed how it didn't get any less awkward when I said "She's also mom."

@jonny@neuromatch.social Every conversation I have had with engineers about how they iterate this process has moved toward "I engineer prompts that eliminate as much ambiguity as possible, and it's frustrating because the limiting factor is often English itself."
And I keep thinking, if only we had some sort of less ambiguous symbolic instruction code with which to model what we want the computer to do..

Who doesn’t love a good round of “Oh my gods you like that? I always hated it!”

@eltonfc@bertha.social I would agree, I just don't know if legal minds have weighed in on this.
The real question I'm wondering is, why hasn't Creative Commons added a "Use for training?" parameter to make it explicit. Seems like an obvious thing for people to want, to me.

Understanding license is not my forte, but I'm curious- is the creative commons CC BY-NC-ND license, which prohibits redistribution considered to bar the use of content to be used for training AI?
The specific text is "If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material."
That feels like it can be weasled around by saying they're not distributing a modified version of the material, they are just using measurements of it.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io What I was hoping to illustrate, after I thought about it, is that sometimes the local maxima that meets the requirements (there's a bathroom trans people feel safe in and cis people accept it) is not the full, equitable, globally maximal solution (trans people should feel safe in whatever bathroom is right for them and cis people accept it)
Without cis folks pointing out the injustice (and trans folks being brave enough not to accept it) we're going to get stuck in that well of inequality.
