In this sloppy AI world I am reminded of the George Orwell essay Politics and the English Language. He wrote it in 1946. Particularly:
A person may take to drink because they feel themselves to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because they drink. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts.
Even without mentioning LLMs, it is extraordinarily relevant. I am particularly struck by the connection between loose language and loose thought.
A lot of people are turning their brains off. That’s always been so, but it’s becoming much easier to writers to do so as well.
