API gravity tells us how light or heavy the oil is.

• US WTI: ~40° API — light, golden, and easier to refine

• Iran Light: ~34° API

• Russia Urals: ~31° API

• Venezuela: ~8–12° API — extremely heavy, like tar

Oil quality plays a major role in global energy economics and politics — not just the amount of oil a country has.

The lighter the crude, the cheaper and easier to refine into gasoline and diesel. Heavier crude requires more refining.
