Is it possible to advertise without it being manipulative?
I’ve known for a while now that most adverts I see use psychologically manipulative tactics to sell their product. The autism sees all, I know you’re trying to mess with my head lol. Earlier I thought, ‘Is it even possible to promote a product en masse without manipulating people in some way, like is there a world where advertising exists where, on a large scale, it is restricted in such a way that it can be said to no longer be manipulative at all?’ What are your thoughts lemmy lads, lasses and enbies?

No, trying to change other peoples’ behavior is the definition of manipulation. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong or a bad thing. You just need to consider the motivations of the person trying to change your behavior and whether the information is credible.

You make a very good point actually, I suppose I hadn’t even asked myself whether manipulation itself is inherently, objectively wrong. If I manipulate a rich bastard into sending food to Palestine, it wouldn’t exactly be bad would it. There’s a lot of gross ads out there though, at the very least they need stricter regulation on what they can show and say unless it’s a product for the betterment of humanity, but I guess what is good and not would be hard to accurately categorise. Fuck ads that are for selling you things you really don’t need, especially when they use dishonest ways to, and even moreso when it’s fuelling an addiction like gambling.
