@lina@eientei.org @vitalis@dirtyknight.life @meso@new.asbestos.cafe The Bulgurs were only a serious rival power in the region for short while. I don't know the details, but one of the Emperors got the title "the bulgur slayer" or something. Now the nationality question. That is far more complicated thanks to a policy of Emperor Caracalla who gave out Roman citizenships like candy to win the loyalty of the provinces. This had the weird effect that a crap ton of non-Italians, especially Greek, Egyptians and Balkan people, saw themselves as Roman. This made the move to the Capital under Constantine piss easy honestly. Another second order effect that some church men could play it lose with the law and hide in the Western Roman Empire from troubles in the Eastern Roman Empire. Later down the line, pushing heresies to the other guys was also a favorite tactic of removing problems. Bogomilism got to the West that way were it mutated into various other whacky Carthar sects. In short; Yes, for a while at the beginning of the New Roman Empire, some Bulgurs were indeed Roman.

@lina@eientei.org @vitalis@dirtyknight.life @meso@new.asbestos.cafe It has indeed eaten the Hellenic world during its founding. I mean Greek Philosophers became monks inside it.

@lina@eientei.org @vitalis@dirtyknight.life its Cuz we're taught at school that they're saints who invented the glagolitsa and their students finisher the Cyrillic script, they were brought into the country and given that opportunity by Tsar Boris, but the impression kids take out of that is that they're bulgarian because they basically invented it.

@meso@new.asbestos.cafe @vitalis@dirtyknight.life i mean yeah, they were canonized as saints for bringing the glagolitsa to the slavs, but they were from the byzantine empire which are basically greeks, i mean despite how much greek and roman names entered the slavic name pools nobody really thinks cyrill and methodius were russians here despite кирилл being a widespread name idk idgi
