When assemblers arrived it was a big step forward, then compilers and interpreters made our lives even easier.
Back in the day we had to debug the compiler output because it wasn't perfect. Many were also skeptical about compilers and performance of compiled code. Years later it became the most common way to code
I think prompt engineering is not very much different, just has a lower barrier to entry, and we are still baby steps now
