I did convert a medium-sized steel hardtail MTB to a touring bike, which basically meant smooth tires and a rear rack to carry panniers. For daughter to ride on our first bike tour. First modestly steep, loaded descent, that bike got the speed shimmies (death wobbles). Scary, but daughter did a good job bringing it under control. Gonna heed geometry & weight distribution next time.
