@marisa Squire and Epiphone are the Strat and Gibson starter lines, respectively. They are fun to play and can hold their own. I'd say for an amp, you can pick up a used valvetronix modeling amp (sounds like a variety of amps/effects) for under $200 at guitar center. It would give your player some fun sounds to play around with.
