I’ve just witnessed a horrific LinkedIn trend in person. There’s an increasing contingent of cultists saying: “We should refer to the field of IT as ‘AI’ because that’s what the future is” I’m not sure what podcast they heard it on, but some guy just said to me: “You work in AI, don’t you?” Um… no? Security and IT “Yeah, AI” This person made a choice to attend a major tech conference and be this stupid. Stop the planet, I’m disembarking.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social @trochee@dair-community.social I wouldn’t want to add to that, and I am very supportive of your work. I will say, it gives off very mixed messages if a post on a public forum carries rules of which way is the acceptable way to reply to it, especially for neurodivergent folks. I’m used to this, but I could have worded my allegedly supportive message of your position better, maybe even braved a quote tweet. I’m not here to argue, and you leaving would be a significant loss.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social @trochee@dair-community.social possibly, certainly wasn’t the intent, but there’s a lot of it around. I still find quote toots a bit ‘twittery’ in that they’re used to insidiously inject an agenda or narrative, rather than add to the current discussion thread. Maybe it’s just me. Perhaps I should adjust that perception somewhat and embrace it.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social @trochee@dair-community.social once again promoting my campaign to stop calling it ‘hallucination’ and start calling it what it is, ‘erroneous output.’ What software error rate is acceptable? 0.1% is a good starting point, 1% a bright red line for a PoC, negligence in the real world. 10%? Don’t be silly. 20%? It’s just working by accident at this point. Real world tests put the average at 45% last month. Correct output just over half the time. A coin flip. The starry-eyed, hopeful, technology-loving childhood me did not want any of this.

Ok. Put a good shift into Lords of the Fallen (2023). I’m about 7 or 8 bosses deep.

It’s really good. I’m a big Soulsborne fan, I’ve finished pretty much every FROM game made, even their other franchises, and this is probably as close to it as you’re going to get to that Dark Souls feeling.

Has some interesting mechanics, like your first death not being ‘final’, but results in an increasingly hostile world until recovery, and switching between the current and a darker, more decayed version of the same world.

Boss fights feel looser, and on regular difficulty it’s not particularly difficult, but there’s lots of tweaks you can make to the game from the menu, including the sorts of things you’d usually get with mods, like enemy randomisers, iron man, hardcore mode etc.

But that looser combat paves the way for an enormous amount of viable builds, with an impressive array of weapons, magic, armour and other loot, with many weapons giving unique movesets. Even ranged is viable.

It also incorporates some of the great features Sekiro and Bloodborne had which encouraged aggressive, or just engaged play. Such as no damage being 100% ‘blockable’ but lost health being recoverable unless you’re hit again before counter attacking, so great if you like a parry… or don’t.

Spent 30 minutes trying to get Lords of the Fallen updated to 2.5 yesterday.

Turns out they remade the game with the same name, basically the same theme and environments 9 years later, and just didn’t say anything.

Purchased now, but feeling a bit silly.

Been in a gaming slump lately.

Picked up Voin on a whim. And it’s a real hidden gem.

A solo developer, too. Such an achievement.

It’s like Doom meets Skyrim meets Borderlands meets Dishonoured meets Dark Souls.

A dungeon crawling, parkour exploration, loot farming, build crafting, parry/dodge murderfest.

Bloody gorgeous too.

I won’t be verifying that I’m over 18 on iOS 26.4, and as of yet, I haven’t seen any downside to not doing so.

I do think this is going to backfire though. If it’s age restricted apps I can’t download, surely I’d just use the website instead.

I hear that the intent is to utilise some sort of age verification flag, but I can’t see it being implemented at all.

Put it this way… from 2016 to 2026, following GDPR mandates for handling visitors to websites only around 15% of public facing websites are GDPR ‘compliant’.

Good luck getting age verification uptake. You can’t block by default, the internet would implode.

I’ve been really burned out of modern gaming for a few years now. Sure there’s the odd gem, but there’s a good reason I’ve not been compelled to upgrade my 1080Ti. Arguably the best consumer GPU card ever released, turning 9 years old this month. I’ve been drawn to older, more polished, more mechanically sound games, entirely unphased by the allure of raytracing and more Ks to the screen. This isn’t nostalgia talking. Looking back you can see key points where the artistry and passion of it all met rampant commercialism. I’ve figured it out. It’s the 1997-1998 transition.

Just you wait. These people have no clue what car combat awaits an unattended car on UK roads. It’s bad enough in the US.

The PlayStation 2 was so popular that production and subsequent sales of it continued throughout the entire PS3 era until the launch of the PS4.

You could buy a *retail* new PS2, PS3, and PS4 in stores, on the same day.

A true testament to the popularity and longevity of good hardware well supported.

I am LOVING seeing so many AI projects being paused or binned.

There’s one silver lining in the mass layoffs, they can’t lay off their absurd investment in power, cooling, and hardware. Loss adjusters and liquidators are rubbing their hands with glee.

Also, many silicon spinners are demanding 5 year agreements on production. It’s go big or go home time, and there will be some casualties.

One org I reluctantly work with pivoted their entire operating model to AI and agents, and they royally screwed their staff over.

They’re now hiring them as consultants at twice their original salary as everything fell on it’s arse, and who knew that go to market suits with a prompt can’t keep infrastructure or business running. Hilariously I know one engineer negotiated a one-sided 12 month contract notice period.

These people are going to get desperate, fast. Fetch the s’mores and let em roast.

iCloud account up and running again. No explanation. Just a lot of hassle with support.

Thankfully it’s a secondary account and I just need to move some services off it.

If you’ve not played the Metro games.

Their post-apocalyptic currency is bullets.

Ours will be RAM.

But not the fast stuff, that’s reserved for the things destroying the planet.

I have 384TB of ECC DDR4 across two blades with 4 CPUs for a combined core count of 96.

It powers a fully populated 192 disk solid state SAN.

I was told it was old and in need of replacing, but apparently now it’s worth more than the GDP of the UK.

Can’t afford to run it (or hear my thoughts when in the vicinity)… but I can sit atop it like a fucking dragon.

And I will.
