@carnage4life@mas.to We didn't pay as much attention as we should have to the experience of our most knowledgeable engineers. Do companies genuinely think that AI/LLM models are sufficiently advanced at this point, to completely replace the most experienced of human workers? I suppose automakers in particular saw the gains from automating/mechanizing so much of the manufacturing side of things, and thought they could apply similar to the engineering side of things. I'm under the impression (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the current cost of LLM tokens is below the actual cost of usage/production, in order to draw in potential customers (and making up the difference by burning through venture capital). Once the venture capital runs out and the prices rise to meet the actual margins, will anyone see it as cost-effective to use anymore, particularly large corporate clients?

@thevhswizard@retro.pizza I suspect it's all about the general clientele that prefers to set up their social media presence in the fediverse as opposed to other places: Decentralized, yet (generally) interoperableMany instances aren't operated for large commercial interestsNot driven by the same kind of algorithms that drive engagement in more centralized platformsSmaller instances/communities can police themselves more effectively, meaning less chance of large-scale muck-ups by bad actors or bots (and if an instance is largely poisoned, it can be de-federated by others) There's a knowledge barrier to entry into the fediverse (choosing the best instance for you, learning how to find and interact with people on other instances, etc.) compared to centralized platforms. But for those who make the effort to understand, it often pays off.

@soatok@furry.engineer There's a parallel to politics, or at least there should be. Legislators writing laws that affect groups of people, ought to invite representatives of those groups of people to have a direct say in the process. Allegedly, New Zealand's parliament directly sought the input of sex workers when writing laws such as the Prostitution Reform Act of 2003: https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2003/0028/latest/whole.html

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange @tg@indieweb.social As someone whose first exposure to the Internet came in the form of all those "free hours" AOL CD's in the mid and late 1990s, I've witnessed the Internet evolve. And I remember consciously using some of those old protocols back in the day (especially Usenet/newsgroups and IRC). It was nice to be reminded that some of those old protocols aren't dead. But centralization and large-scale commercialization of the Internet definitely makes it different than I remember growing up. It made the Internet more accessible to ordinary people (as opposed to the technically savvy), but it comes at a cost of appealing to the lowest common denominator. Perhaps that's why I've taken a liking to the federated nature of Mastodon in recent years -- as far as web-visible social media goes, I'm more active here than anywhere else.

It's been a bit since I posted any new comment (or reply) here on Mastodon since I've been busy with other things, but:

I wanted to remind everyone that I have a #Twitch channel, and that I typically stream on Tuesdays and Thursdays after 7 PM (US Central time).

https://twitch.tv/IntaglioWhitegraven

I maintain a Telegram channel where I announce when I'm going live, as well as what I plan on playing during that stream. I've manually pasted the stream announcement on this Mastodon account a few times, but lately I've forgotten to do so. If you use #Telegram, feel free to subscribe to my announcement channel.

@hannah Perhaps I'm just missing something obvious here, but...isn't the whole point of conducting surveys to gather data from people? If the only entities being surveyed are A.I. agents that mimic human speech and which could be programmed to say anything, how is it meaningful? It seems as meaningful to me as "Our survey data says 95% of people approve our product. We surveyed 1000 people whom we paid $100 each to say positive things about us."

@project1enigma@chaos.social @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I admit that my knowledge on the subject is limited, and maybe it was foolish of me to speak up in the first place. No doubt, online ID verification shares some of the same problems as face-to-face ID verification. What I mentioned may merely be a technical solution to a non-technical problem (or, once again, I may be speaking out of ignorance).

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Whenever I see discussions about online ID/age verification come up, I tend to see a few people speaking up about ZKP (zero knowledge proofs). Admittedly, I know almost nothing about it, but a cursory read on the subject makes it sound like it could be a solution to the problem. Of course, this is assuming that one takes the stated/claimed problems (e.g. protecting age-restricted spaces from those who are underage) at face value. When it's more likely that the goal of these programs is broad surveillance and control, which nobody would willingly accept if it was presented so plainly.

@Purple As someone who basically refuses to use AI for anything, it's likely I'm unaware of just how much the use of it has pervaded people's working behaviors. My understanding is that AI and LLM's are meant to be a tool. As with any tool, if used properly, it can be helpful and effective in completing a task. But there's a reason that people are educated on how to do things manually before they're allowed to use tools: there needs to be that sense of intuition that informs a person whether something seems correct or doesn't. What you're describing, seems to be an outsourcing of critical thinking to these tools. It's like putting someone in the driver's seat of a self-driving car and now they're panicking when they have to take manual control.

@exec@furry.engineer From what I understand about the "Stop Killing Games" initiative (and I may not have the whole picture), I support the idea. I don't like the idea of games having a required online component that only makes them playable as long as the developers keep the servers online (which basically gives games finite lifespans). As someone who's notoriously late to the party on buying new games, it means we've now reached an era where a game can live and die before I can get around to playing it. I would sign this initiative, but since I don't live in the EU, I question whether I'm eligible. I also wonder: just like what happened with the GDPR, will companies only change their practices in places where something like this has the force of law?

Most of the time I only open Steam just to launch whatever title I want to play, and the "no-browser" mode was perfect for that.
