My brother: What’s the name of this thing? [picks up my blahaj] Me: Loftus. Brother: Weird name. Why’s that? Me: Named after Elizabeth Loftus, the psychologist and academic whose work was important in documenting misinformation, false memories, and the unreliable nature of eyewitness testimony. Brother: Wow, you are a giant nerd. You’re such a giant nerd that Comic-Con would kick you out. Why don’t you name your stuffed toys things like “Squishy” like a normal person? Me: I don’t think a n...

Miyazaki films are, in my opinion, the best anti-war films because they — much like the videogame Papers, Please — focus on the other aspects of war that isn’t the actual war itself, thereby giving you the horrors of war without needing to glamorise it Most western-made¹ anti-war films end up being unintentionally pro-war because in order to show their heroes and protagonists acting heroic in the face of their adversity, they show warfare in a way that is a spectacle. Films like 1917, Saving Pr...

Was Harry Potter a huge part of my childhood? Well, when the seventh book came out, I read it on the day, in one go. So yes, it was a huge part of my childhood. But my childhood is wayyy over. The seventh book came out in 2007! The last film was released in 2011, when I was in my late teens. Harry Potter was in my childhood. My childhood is in the past. The past is not the present. To me, I grew out of it after I watched the last film. There’s nothing more to the series than that. I grew out...

Disney writing be like: I am a villain who wished to change the status quo for the better. I believe the powerful should be humbled, that the masses should have freedom, and the rich should be stripped of their wealth. Now I am going to blow up this hospital filled with puppies to ensure you link social justice with evilness.

I started playing Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015). It has aged very well, the graphics and art design still are very sharp. It still feels immersive. I was worried it would have felt a bit dated now, because many games overuse the some of the things it popularised… but it’s funny because these mechanics are very restrained, unlike other games that came after that really nagged you about using them (eg having a special instinct, highlights on climbable objects) I feel like games of this calibre...

It’s really insane that the German Chancellor, channelling his inner Protestant neoliberal, has said that “work-life balance” and a “four-day week” means that Germany can’t achieve prosperity Work till your bones turn to dust, who cares about seeing your family or friends? The Chancellor wants all Germans to do their duty to the economy and be more productive by somehow working harder, of course, of course!!!
