Should billionaires, as a concept, be allowed to exist? #EndBillionaires (To be clear, I mean "should a single person be allowed to have a personal wealth of $1B USD or more", not "should we actually literally kill them" or anything like that.) I'm genuinely curious if anyone who answers yes can convince me I'm wrong. Or if I can convince you you're wrong. Genuine discussion welcome! I'll post some of my thoughts / answers to arguments I've heard in r...

Ugh, something is freaking eating my lunch with network costs for media from Mastodon. And GCP media hosting via cloud buckets doesn't seem to have any great ways to filter that / figure out if it's from AI scrapers or something else (and do anything about it if I could figure that out). Any #MastoAdmin folks fight with this already and have any suggestions?

You've got to be fucking kidding me, Google Cloud's Cloud Armor security policies won't do HTTP header based filtering on a GCS Cloud CDN bucket endpoint?

I guess gas prices that start with a "1" are over until they add another digit before the decimal or change the units, huh?

Okay I'm starting to think that the Google Cloud console is in fact having an as-yet-undetected/reported outage.

RE: https://mastodon.online/@universalhub/116484579333805424 Such absurd virtue-signalling. Let's work on problems Boston actually has. Datacenters ain't one of them - the cost of land, and power, and water are all way too high for it to make any sense. Knock off the #NIMBY headline-chasing and spend time on our actual problems like drugs, and terrible bike infrastructure, and y'know, the housing crisis?

Howdy #UnionPlace! Monthly hosting costs have bloomed a bit over the past few months, from under $500/mo to over $650 this month. I'm taking a look at where we can cut back, but just a reminder that union.place is run by Labor Union Networking Inc, a US non-profit whose main funder is yours truly, and any donations you can make are greatly appreciated! https://www.laborunionnetworking.org/donate has the details of how you can donate, lots of options available! Thank you for your support...

How did I only learn about #Tailscale yesterday? WHY HAVEN'T YOU ALL TOLD ME ABOUT IT?!? To be fair I HAD heard about it, I just hadn't actually had a use case for it, or at least, hadn't REALIZED I had a use case for it. Which I did. I can now access my building's Building Management System (BMS) without having to go up to the crappy laptop on the fourth floor. If I really want to I can probably even set up remote desktop so I can use the desktop version, not j...

Wow, the Google Cloud console is either very badly broken or just has terrible resiliency to a bad filtering proxy (I suspect the latter more so than the former).

The "logic" of blocking content from being archived on the Wayback Machine to prevent it being used for AI training blows my mind. Locks only keep the honest people out. In this case, all you're doing is restricting access for quite probably the best, and possibly the only, long-term durable archive of the Internet. The downsides for society are countless. Breathless headline, but good piece, from Wired: https://www.wired.com/story/the-internets-most-powerful-archivin...

Fellow #MastoAdmin people: if you need to track down all users invited by a particular user, here's an SQL query (disclosure: generated by Gemini, vetted and validated by me): see next post.

Check your servers for a user named 'aarohi' with no or few posts, and any posts they do have are clearly generated nonsense. They probably invited a bunch of acconts after using a plausible "reason for joining", and then those accounts are spreading pro-Russia propaganda. Check recent IFTAS alerts regarding the scheme in general. See my thread for a Mastodon database query to track their invitees: https://union.place/@tim/116426691453325273 #FediBlock #MastoA...

Wow, I am surprised, TurboScum actually still honored my $150 flat rate even though I had to wait until after 3/31 to actually have their expert file for me because <stupid prior year amendment reasons>. I really figured that the whole $150 no add-ons for all tax situations, any number of states, had to be a scam. But I guess it is, still - a scam to put independent tax preparers out of business. My "list price" was over $1000 in the end.

Dear so many websites: no, I don't want you to email me a code to login. I HAVE A FUCKING PASSWORD MANAGER. LET ME USE MY PASSWORD. I would also accept a passkey. But not this fucking "we'll email you six digits like that's not easy to brute force" bullshit.
