What's the current preferred way to to set up a clean, resettable build environment for older versions of macOS? (I have an ancient laptop that runs High Sierra and I'd like to try to get stuff compiled on it with/adjacent to MacPorts, preferably on a faster machine. On Linux, I'd just use a Docker container with the minimal set of installed packages and clone/delete as needed. But for macOS?)

FWIW, I've found JRuby to be *really* nice to use--basically, identical to CRuby most of the time, minus certain understandable incompatibilities and the bonus of being able to use virtually any Java library pretty much seamlessly. The main downside is that it takes a few seconds to start up and just load the script.

Huh. SuperCollider's AI policy is actually pretty reasonable. ( https://github.com/supercollider/supercollider/blob/develop/CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md#usage-of-ai-tools ).

Huh. It turns out that Ubuntu 24 LTS distributes its firmware updater as a snap. So now I'm trying PopOS. (This is not a veiled request for alternative low-effort Debian-based distros, but feel free to chime in anyway if you want.)

Crap! I'm probably going to have to try the crab-based AI thingy, aren't I?

You can tell if someone is a computering supergenius if their solution to a difficult problem looks like nothing. Lisp is six functions. Forth is 200 bytes. Unix is just tiny programs and text files. The original web is just a hacked SMTP server sending SGML files. And yet, it does *that*. The huge, complex stuff--Windows, Java, the modern web--is all the work of mediocre thinkers with big budgets and too little time.
