Hey Fedi privacy folks! Can public school systems in the US share student and family data with any 3rd party they choose? Can they do so if the school hasn't shared a data privacy policy? It's my understanding of FERPA that parents have to be given a copy of that policy + opt in. Maybe I'm wrong, tho. Our school is doing some heavy pushing of ed tech with the start of the year and providing no documentation. Half expect RFID tags by Sept. #AskFedi #privacy #law #EdTech #ThisIsSo...

Seems like two really helpful resources for community building and voting resources. I was just on a call with Count Us In, and they feel like an authentic and well-organized group doing much needed work. Good practice with accessibility, too, as they included ASL interpretation and kicked off AI note taking bots! https://www.commoncause.org/indiana https://countusindiana.turbovote.org/ #HoosierMast #Indiana #VotingRights #community

Amazing gaslighting from a mass email I saw from a big financial advising company today (Chase), claiming that uncited data supports steadiness and that this "short term volitativity" shall pass. As if people aren't dying and being hurt on the word of hateful men. That counts as "volitativity," I guess, to these cold bastards. If only they were as "resilient" as the portfolios of the rich. Or maybe if they had the foresight to own mo...

I don't accept the biased hype that AI is inevitable. Very few things are, and there aren't reliable reasons to support AI's inevitability. Most things in public life, in fact, involve layers and layers of choices by people somewhere - maybe even yours and mine, eh? Once we know contexts, harms, (the few) benefits, and facts around AI, shouldn't that knowledge inform our choices to act where we can? That doesn't sound like purity culture. That sounds lik...
