Truly amazing set of HCDE PhD students going on the job market this year - I’m excited for their next steps but will be sad to see them go. Learn more here and reach out directly if they might be a match to roles in your organization: https://www.hcde.washington.edu/people/outgoing-phds-and-postdocs

Do you have a product or service that would benefit from a quarter-long usability evaluation by outstanding MS students at University of Washington Human Centered Design & Engineering? We are looking for 10-week projects, from early January- early March. Teams will need access to a stable product or prototype and direct access to users, and they will prepare a report and final presentation documenting usability issues. To propose a project, please use this form: https://forms.gle/S26mH...

Our university adopted a new platform for grad student application management. When I log in, the first thing that greets me is a banner for the platform’s “spirit shop”. Not tutorials or info about my apps. Even if this platform were the paragon of usability, I cannot imagine the user journey the designer/developer had in mind with this choice. A colleague asked if they sell punching bags in the spirit shop.

We are a group of HCI+Health researchers who are exploring the possibility of a SIGCHI-sponsored HCI+Health conference. As someone interested in or working at the intersection of these fields, we would appreciate your feedback on such a conference, its format, interest in participating, and willingness to volunteer as part of its organizational effort. https://uci.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9B3V1EUdIvc2c7A

Some nice UW coverage of Shengzhi Wang’s CSCW paper on how older adults’ social support networks (both support received and support given) shifted during the pandemic, and the role of technology in those shifts. https://www.washington.edu/news/2024/05/15/covid-19-pandemic-older-adults-technology-use-smartphones/ You can see more in the paper at https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3641027
