“It’s easy to understand that when people arrived on this landscape, that it was a landscape that was shaped and maintained by #fire and that it was exquisitely beautiful,” White says. “It’s easy to understand that traditional knowledge of fire should be integrated into fire management practices today, but, man, that’s hard to achieve.” #rewilding #forests #wildfires #forestmanagement #landmanagement #stewardship https://www.rewildingmag.com/indigenous-forest-management-a-culture-of-burning/

"If you put less mycelium, it may take longer to grow. Put a lot of mycelium, it grows faster. Slight temperature changes and humidity levels will also affect it. "I embrace that part because I don’t want the lingzhi to grow all the same. It’s like individuals – we all grow differently and so do my sculptures. I see them as individual lives." #rewilding #art #mushrooms #creativity @davidsuzukifdn@kilogram.makeup https://www.rewildingmag.com/the-artist-building-sculptures-out-...

If you want to say goodbye to your days of pushing a lawnmower and shelling out to keep your grass green, there are lots of possibilities. You can sow a meadow of wildflowers, rewild the space with native plants or refashion your yard into a fruit and vegetable garden. But before you can turn your dreams into action, you’ll need to remove your lawn grass. #rewilding #gardening #nolawns https://www.rewildingmag.com/the-pros-and-cons-of-5-lawn-removal-methods/

"What’s important in landscaping with #insects in mind, or 'entoscaping,' is considering insects early and often when you visit the #garden store. "With a few pots or window boxes, even a balcony can be converted into a cozy insect oasis." #rewilding #ecology #gardening #plants #bugs #bees #nativeplants https://www.rewildingmag.com/how-and-why-to-welcome-insects-to-your-garden/

"We draw a crowd if we’re on a public beach. Everyone wants to see the wild endangered birds run away. "It’s a little bit anticlimactic, though, honestly, because the camouflage on the chicks is so good that you let them go, and they run off into the sand in the distance, and then you just don’t see them again." #rewilding #greatlakes #detroit #michigan #pipingplovers #birds #wildlife #restoration #ecology https://www.rewildingmag.com/the-great-lakes-piping-plover-is-making-a...

The first signs of recovery came with the monsoon, when a grass cover sprouted over the land. “Every day was a surprise after that,” he says. Soon, insects returned, followed by woodland birds like orioles, barbets and hornbills. The park is now home to diverse forms of life, including amphibians, invertebrates and several mammals like nilgai and the jungle cat. #rewilding #india #cities #urbanrewilding #ecology #nativeplants #reforestation https://www.rewildingmag.com/the-making-of-an-urban...

"ANY landscape that isn't clipped lawn will be an affront, but we have to do better as advocates for change. "Just letting plants ramble about, get tall, flop into sidewalks – and appear totally dishevelled and out of control while blocking sight lines – is a detriment to what we hope to achieve as we work for equity among all species by encouraging neighbours to rethink lawn monocultures." #nolawns #rewilding #gardening #landscaping #climatechange #biodiver...

@waimeafalls Yes one thing Douglas Tallamy promotes that I think works is the mullet-style garden: neat right in the front with messy behind. Even a narrow mowed border as a frame provides a strong cue to care while what's inside the frame can be whatever is needed. I've also seen "wild" areas within neatly trimmed hedges which works well in some contexts!

"North American lawns, maintained with pesticides and fertilizers, don’t support native plant and native bee populations. "There’s huge value in challenging monocultural lawns and the enormous ecological damage they have caused, but offering a feel-good moment of aesthetic rebellion risks obscuring, and even undermining, the bigger goal." #nomowmay #rewilding #gardening #bees #pollinators https://www.rewildingmag.com/no-mow-may-downside/

"I’d advise any rewilder to avoid underestimating the usefulness of scrubby pioneer trees in restoration efforts. "They provide shelter, microhabitats, and improve the soil, ensuring that the resilience and health of a new woodland will be stronger in the long run." #rewilding #scotland #reforestation #trees #planting #drones https://www.rewildingmag.com/the-scottish-rewilders-using-drones-to-plant-trees/

In 1980, Devaki Amma met with a life-threatening car accident. She couldn’t walk for three years, and when she eventually did, it was considered a miracle. Her recovery was slow and excruciating. But, amidst the darkest of the clouds, Devaki Amma found a silver lining, one that would, over the years, spread across five acres of land – a native forest she raised and planted with her own two hands. #rewilding #india #forests #treeplanting https://www.rewildingmag.com/i-didnt-know-i-was-bui...
