@waimeafalls Yes one thing Douglas Tallamy promotes that I think works is the mullet-style garden: neat right in the front with messy behind. Even a narrow mowed border as a frame provides a strong cue to care while what's inside the frame can be whatever is needed. I've also seen "wild" areas within neatly trimmed hedges which works well in some contexts!
