  Watching x-files, always fun. We live in interesting times. For a lot of their story lines, if everyone in the vicinity had an always available, in their pocket, video and still camera, a lot of stories would fall apart, or be proved supernatural. A UFO landing then would be one guy with an iffy photo still. Now it would be 100 live streams. We have that now, but we are weirdly in a period beyond that. Now, we can have 100 AI generated live streams at a whim, and nothing can be trusted!

  I know film tropes are special, and I wondered on this. Seen on old x-files, the notion of a "call trace" - Takes time - Have to stay on call - Gets more and more digits over time I wonder how much is based on reality, albeit distorted. I imagine analogue exchanges, someone at exchange checking mechanical selectors, or a (non audio) "buzzing" out the circuit, and it taking time. The second anything digital it (a) takes no time and (b) can be done after the call has ended...

  Dental is mental! We have NHS and covers some huge possible costs. Why the fuck are eyes and teeth separate. I have good dental insurance, at some notable cost, but a filling, 30 minutes, was £230 and insurance only covers £125. We need healthcare in UK to cover eyes and teeth as well, really.

  Local stratum 1 GPS NTP time server, yay! Now to see how it copes with sun and rain. The bag is an extra precaution. Tracking 36 satellites and using 19, over three networks. Current PPS tracking with σ=16ns Current jitter measured at FireBrick (NTP client) of 0.08ms, and latency of 0.7ms. Selected over any pool (via Internet) servers, understandably.   FFS Companies House get worse. Not only is the whole Director/PSC ID thing a mess and has a 14 day window not a deadline, and so on. The Director==PSC logic is broken, they make it all the date for filing confirmation statement but that does not identify PSC, even though PSC is director and director is verified. So letters, etc. Latest is an email saying not filed. DOES NOT SAY WHICH FUCKING COMPANY IT IS FOR DOES NOT SAY NAME OF PSC THAT HAS NOT FILED. FFS!!!! Utter incompetence!

  I have generally managed to use gcc on mac, but now it is all broken. So annoying. The Man clang does not handle nested functions even gnu99, so I brew installed the native arm gcc, which is a good start. But it cannot find err.h and no amount of googling is helping me find it. It should be standard clib stuff. Any clues welcome - what formulae or whatever it is called do I need to install? #macos #clib #brew #homebrew

  This is an odd one. Just wanted to check next full moon. Google popped asking for my location and I said NO! Then it get this. So it knows my location anyway. But why say location. The full moon is a specific point in time regardless of where you are in the world. Maybe it is just time zone related.

  Annoying.. Yes, I went to bed early - was awake most of last night for other reasons. Then saw a new bug report on codeberg. It is suspiciously well worded, but comes to totally wrong conclusions. It completely makes up the idea of my Faikout code downloading a "manifest" file, and then finding a TLS issue with the binary. Neither are true.   Yay, IPv6 Ethernet working properly now I fixed my own stupid config error. To elaborate. I had set the subnet to explicitly not have "autonomous" (A) setting and to have "other (O) setting and DHCPv6 (experimental). This stopped the ESP getting an address (sensibly so). The WiFi VLAN was a more normal config, and so worked. We will have full DHCPv6 on FireBrick in due course, but for now it was testing I set up long ago, and forgot about. Kicking myself a lot.

  The #Faikout boards work well, but it occurs to me that Ethernet connection for air-con units would be really good for some installations (more reliable and secure). A simple Ethernet version may be as little as £5 extra, but there is a concern if using with an X403 connection which is at grid power levels. It has isolating magnetics and margins, but still, not certified grid power safety isolation. So now pondering a PoE version with opto-isolated S21 connection to aircon as an alternative.

  Hmm. My beta release of #Faikout on 12th was broken. I had got a long way in debugging when someone suggested that the build had used v6.0.1-dirty of the ESP IDF, and had me previous debug/meddling with LWIP inadvertently broken something. I am very sure I would have got there soon. A clean IDF install fixed it. Well spotted. Now he owns up and says he used claud! It gave a sensible explanation even (well, did not find the bug, but concluded I must have fucked up LWIP). I feel -dirty now.

  Thanks everyone for the well wishes. Yes, I am hardly sleeping, feeling like crap. Counting down to next paracetamol. Hopefully this won’t drag on for too long… What worries me is longer term issues. I have spent years recovering from a stroke after my last bout of Covid, and was finally feeling a lot more “myself” again, at last. I hope nothing that bad, but it could easily be a thick head for months, or years. It was bad watching my dad die of covid. Take care everyone. #covid

  Today has been really weird. Coffee machine would not turn on, had to be power cycled at the mains. Washing machine would not turn on, had to be power cycled at the mains. A USB charger decided to break. And now the dishwasher is being silly as well. I need to get my Fluke mains tester back maybe... #gremlins

  Is "raw milk" just the latest "anti-vax" craze? Many people want “the good old days” before vaccines and pasteurisation and so on, forgetting that in those days only half of your kids lived to school age (and raw milk did not help that).   So, updated, slightly. The QR code serves three purposes now. 1. It is a link to my PCB shop as people have been known to ask where they get a magic doorbell, and now we can say scan the QR code. 2. It has embedded in it a date/time, so if used as a delivery photo that data is in the QR as well as on screen. 3. The shop link is a logged redirect so shows me if someone has decoded and accessed the QR code at some later date, suggesting someone may be using as training data? #QR

  This is quite fun - running a proper (deliberately) old school style web site - all plain text (one logo image) so very fast to load, but css used. All static pages for fast reliable working, but some of those are generated from database tools now. It should provide what people need to know without the huge bloat of more "modern" web sites.
