I do hate this guilt I feel when putting together code for publishing. I'm trying to make a demo to show how to use a web component (for open source), top is my efforts after 20 minutes. Below is the output from 2 lines of AI.

🤔 not thought about these in a while, but hadn't occurred to me that there isn't (that I could see) a Microformat for a bookmark - seems to fall into the same type as a `h-entry` which - in my head - is a full post. I guess a bookmark is a micropost…but still…

I've hit a few blog posts that either write about having to add an AI statement, along the lines of: this site never uses AI for it's content, or "don't use AI for your blog posts". Which, yeah, obs. Has anyone actually seen this in the wild? Slop based blogs? Or even semi-slop?

The uncomfortable work that we men, the ones who consider ourselves allies, is to call out and teach those boys around us. And fuck yes to gathering evidence to get the shit bags tossed. 👏 and 🙏 to @anarodrigues on her post https://ohhelloana.blog/woman-in-tech/

Enjoying the **last** #AllDayHey. The biggest thing I get from events, that I can't get from anywhere else: people who care about the things I care about. I'm always nervous attending, worrying I'll be alone, and it never goes that way. But it's always okay. See you at the next event, right?

I think the answer is no (because I keep testing different variations of it), but(!), is it possible to write a CSS selector based on a pseudo element's position. ie. `dialog::backdrop + div { color: red }` (bad example, but should give you an idea). Equally is `:has(::backdrop)` a thing?

I'll just write a short blog post about the thing. 1,100 words later. 🤦 It's done though, link coming.

Prompted by @bramus' encouragement, I've written about popovers and the backdrop psuedo selector and how I think…it can lead to anti-patterns, it certainly did for me. https://remysharp.com/2026/05/08/popover-backdrop-anti-pattern

The last minutes of the last #AllDayHey. Been an honour to speak (in 2019), but moreso, attend. Huge thanks to @heypresents and so many others for running it over the last decade. <tips-hat-then-hugs>

The sticker @matthiasott grabbed for me at @btconf now appropriately sits on my broken basket. But (hopefully) it's not quite game over!

Thanks for the clothes recommendations yesterday. This is most of them in a list: https://gist.github.com/remy/9229c42431b45d4122e517c28284dee0 I made myself a quick tool for extract these from future social posts where I ask "recommendation for X" here https://tools.remysharp.com/social-replies/

Testing my new cross post process. I finally managed to fix a LOT of problems in the last one, @janl.bsky.narrativ.es kindly prompted me the last time. Now I've got a UI that helps me debug too. (this tests if a) cross posts works, b) find's Jan's masto account on the masto side)

I wish I could make the Firefox View the thing that loads up when I load a new blank tab. So much better than the history (which I'm sure just misses stuff).

Happy new Murderbot book day. Long one this time too.

For sure going! (Wonder how this turns up on my masto cross post 🤔 should just be a link)

It's interesting that Mastodon has strong support for accessibility (i.e. blocking posts without alt text - yes, I know bsky can be turned on too, slightly harder UX I think), yet on Masto, you can't add subtitles to video, whereas you can add a vtt file on bsky.

I might have just managed to spin up a new AWS server, and have a full deploy chain running in 30 minutes. I've never had an AWS server live deployed from `main` branch from github actions. It's always been an extra I've had to pay for/non-AWS services.

I don't quite understand why installing an extension on Netlify means it's then installed on ALL projects. I've got a few projects that are achingly old, and as such, the extension actually prevents the build from finishing (and I really don't want to update it because it's in full autonomous mode)

I did fix my cross posting thingy, so now I can successfully @-the crap out of @janl and they'll get double pinged from all the socials (i.e. my masto and bsky accounts). https://janl.bsky.narrativ.es

Really didn't think it would work, but my hotel offers free wifi for 30 minutes. So I'm now running this command every 30 minutes then reconnecting: ``` sudo ifconfig en0 ether $(openssl rand -hex 6 | sed 's/\(..\)/\1:/g; s/.$//') ``` I'm just rotating my mac address.

This blog post is so short it (is) a social post. https://remysharp.com/2026/05/01/devtools-how-to-query-through-the-shadow-dom But if I don't blog it, I'll forget it. Huge thanks to @keithamus for sharing it.

This *is* cool, but does anyone else remember the time when "built in a week" was a red flag? Lately it's used as testament as to validate and justify. I don't deny it's impressive. It…just doesn't sit in the right spot for *me* when it's anything other than a scrappy tool or prototype.

I keep coming across really cool projects that either: just work with CSS _or_ just work with zero-JavaScript, that, when I open in Firefox apparently, _just_ work in Chrome. This wasn't the goal folks…

Wondering if anyone that follows me has a work Palm Pilot (not emulator, I have those!). I'm after a (nice) photo of it running an old game I wrote. Appreciate the hardware is from a good few decades ago! (I'm sure I saw mine in the 2010s, just don't think I can sync it).
