Due to discourse*, decided to blog about the topic du jour. In which I enter to the discourse some opinions, such as: "Perfection as a prerequisite to action is absurdly short-sighted." or more spicy... "...accepting model output into our "open source" projects, that is a political choice." https://pythonbynight.com/blog/accepting-probabilistic-software-is-a-political-choice

I covered data work exploitation in my most recent talk, but I did not highlight how prevalent it has become in the US. The horrors of what this kind of work does in the global south will continue, of course. But for "AI" to get "smarter", the data pipeline/supply chain will increasingly depend on displaced workers desperate for work, even in more developed countries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aooiDA-AsNo

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@mitsuhiko/116516650761539560 I can appreciate some of the introspection here, but this isn't exactly novel. The homogenization effect of high LLM usage has been noticed/evaluated, and is a major concern specifically in the realm of cognitive science. "The homogenizing effect of large language models on human expression and thought" - https://www.cell.com/trends/cognitive-sciences/abstract/S1364-6613(26)00003-3 "The Homogenization o...

Remember when I posted about PyCon US and Art in the same toot? Well, some friends and I are pretty excited about it. And guess what, we're looking for folks to join us on Friday, May 15 to create art, showcase art, and even discuss what art even means in this age of "AI". https://us.pycon.org/2026/events/open-spaces/#openspace-40 We want to showcase the creativity of the Python community, and we'd love to see your art. Do you have something you plan to bring...

In the ongoing ai-copalypse at work... I've been tasked with developing a "code review" process for the large LLM generated changes. I pushed back during our standup, basically stating that our "code review" is no longer a "code review" because 1) humans cannot review the code at the speed of LLM code generation and 2) the purpose of said review seems to have shifted. I asked for clarity. What is the purpose of the review going forward? It is decidedly NOT to k...

RE: https://dair-community.social/@timnitGebru/116489502664120783 "The files offer a glimpse into a world where ideas about eugenics and race science have never gone away. On the contrary, they run through our elite universities, through the most powerful companies in Silicon Valley, and through the tech industry itself." Welp... this is certainly a punctuation mark on my talk over the weekend. πŸ˜–

I blogged about my recent experience at North Bay Python. Probably more of the same if you followed the chatter over the weekend. A summary and video of my talk are elsewhere. Here I reflect on some of my inner thoughts before/during my talk, a reflection on a few talks that seemed connected to my theme, and impressions overall. https://pythonbynight.com/blog/north-bay-python-2026 #NBPy #Python

This weekend, I had the opportunity to give a difficult talk. It's not much of a surprise if you've followed my writing this year, and it's certainly a heavy topic. And to be honest, I don't think there is too much new info there, particularly for individuals on this platform. But connecting the dots into a full picture can sometimes have a deeper effect, and that is partly what I was attempting to do here. The video has now been posted over here: https://ww...

Hellish day and all, but was happy to see the Tiny Desk Concert host Aterciopelados, a Colombian band I remember from the early aughts when my then-Colombian gf introduced me... inject a tiny bit of joy and irreverence to your day and give it a watch. https://www.npr.org/2026/04/07/g-s1-114297/aterciopelados-tiny-desk-concert #TinyDesk #Music

The abyss that exists between factions of LLM users and abolitionists stems from differing perspectives on the harms produced by the industry. https://pythonbynight.com/blog/the-llm-ate-my-baby #AI #LLM
